P.U.R.E. Pemba Urban Resilience and Ecosystem Based Approaches is a project realized within the - Green and Smart Cities SASA programme, funded by the European Union.
The project focuses its activities on the urban districts of Wete and Micheweni located in the northern part of Pemba, one the of the two main islands forming part of the Zanzibar Archipelago. The overall objective of the Green and Smart Cities programme is to contribute to sustainable and inclusive urban development for the benefit of communities and businesses.
The main objective of the P.U.R.E project is to support the establishment of safe, inclusive, resilient and sustainable urban areas through a multi-stakeholder approach. In particular, it seeks to increase access to basic services, especially for women and children living in urban areas. Through a period of three years the project will address the following key challenges:
-
Poor water access, sanitation, and stormwater management in primary schools and health-centers;
-
Poor waste management;
-
Lack of urban recreation and green spaces;
-
Lack of safe public spaces for women;
-
Lack of opportunities for women to generate sustainable income.
AAMatters is responsible for the management and implementation of work-package 3: Promote Sustainable Urban Development for Building Resilient Communities. As part of its activities, it will carry out rehabilitation of green urban play and recreation areas, upgrading of public community spaces and capacity building in field-mapping and integrated urban development. AAMatters will also support Oikos East Africa in the implementation of other work-packages.
